Gippsland Writers Network Summer Writing Competition

Send us your spec fic, horror, fantasy, literary, historical, or uncategorised words! Use your imagination, twist it up, make us stop and take a breath.

Entries must be received by Tuesday 31 January at 5.00pm.

1st Prize: $200 cash
2nd Prize: $50 book voucher
3rd Prize: $30 book voucher

The theme is ‘home’.

Flash fiction up to 500 words.

This magnificent red gum is in my front yard. I call it my magic tree. I don’t know how long it has been here, or how old it is—I do know I don’t even come close to wrapping my arms around its trunk. I wonder what stories it could tell me of its lifetime? What it has seen? What it has survived?

Over the weekend, it waved and shook in the wild winds but it didn’t drop any branches and it stayed standing.

Writing prompt: do you have a favourite tree in your yard or park? What does the tree mean to you? What stories does it whisper to you?

Are you a word nerd? I love discovering words I’ll (probably) never use, and their meanings. Sometimes I love them for the way they sound, sometimes for the way they roll around in my mouth. What are some of your favourite words?

Our Treasurer, Tash, is a Gippsland-based writer w

Our Treasurer, Tash, is a Gippsland-based writer who lives in the Latrobe Valley area with her partner, two cats, five chickens and seven alpacas. But to be clear, only her partner and the cats live in the house with her. She writes personal essays, memoir, and poetry—and many, many lists. When she’s not writing, Tash is busy powering Gippsland in her role as an operator at the Yallourn Power Station, while she herself is powered by coffee.

In 2020, she won the Grace Marion Wilson Emerging Writers Competition for her non-fiction essay, Sexy Nails, which was published in the October-November edition of The Victorian Writer magazine. And, she was recently longlisted for the Richell Prize 2021 for her memoir-in-progress about marriage, mental health, and the breakdown of both.

Tash begins far too many sentences with conjunctions, likes to procrastinate by taking writing workshops instead of actually writing, and owns more notebooks than one person should ever be permitted.
